Courses Description

Parenting Skills:0-6 years (Joyce Callus)

This course instructs parents in democratic methods for raising children and it addresses contemporary dilemmas parents now face. Parents nowadays can no longer demand children's submission, and instead must base their discipline on the principles of freedom and responsibility. This very popular course teaches simple ways that parents can learn to understand their children and help their children become contributing members of society. Some of the topics discussed include understanding the child, the fallacy of punishment and reward, the use of consequences, showing respect for the child, respecting others and the rights of others, maintaining routines, refraining from overprotection, making reasonable requests, following through, listening, having fun together, and the family council.

Baby Sign Language

Imagine communicating with your baby before he or she can even speak. Baby sign language reduces frustration, accelerates verbal development and strengthens cognitive skills. It also enhances child-parent bonding through time spent teaching signs to your baby. Research shows that preverbal infants can communicate through the use of sign language long before they can verbalize their needs. At mamaKNOWS we offer classes and workshops based on the Sign with your Baby® program developed by Dr Joseph Garcia. We will give you the skills and knowledge you will need to communicate with your preverbal, hearing baby. So come and take a class and learn how to sign with your baby! These classes run in 4-week sessions, which introduce you to every day words, family signs, food and animals. Classes are 45 minutes in length and are created for parent and babies. In a relaxed environment, parents and children will build their Sign Language vocabulary through instruction, interactive games and songs. You will learn recommended first signs; we will discuss the benefits of using ASL with infants and demonstrate easy techniques for successfully integrating signs into everyday life.

Sing to your baby!

A fun course for expectant and new mothers!

Studies show that singing to a child, right from birth and even during pregnancy has significant benefits, both for your baby and for yourself. Not only does singing strengthen the immune system in adults but also notably improves the performer's mood. Babies and children benefit because singing simply has a natural soothing effect on them and it "enriches their sensory environment."

You do NOT have to be a "good" singer and whatever you sing can be very simple. Your child will love you singing to them, even if you feel you have a tin ear! You just need the confidence to do it. We will be mixing traditional lullabies with pop tunes, country songs, jazz melodies and favorite ballads which you get to keep at the end of the course. So come join this fun class and start singing with American singer/voice teacher, Deborah Harrison!

mamaKNOWS is pleased to bring a much needed service to parents in Malta and Gozo. Are you interested in the concept of babywearing but are unsure of how it works? Too scared to spend your hard earned money on something that you have never seen in the flesh, let alone tried with your own baby? Not sure how to put on all the funny looking pieces of material? Sylvana is a very experienced babywearer. She has 'worn' all three of her children and has owned and used pretty much every type of sling and carrier there is; she still regularly carries her youngest child and often carries her 3 year old toddler too! She has expert knowledge of various babywearing positions and in particular which positions best suit your baby and your changing needs best as your baby grows.

She will show you how to put on a sling and how to use a variety of different carrying positions. You will also have the opportunity to purchase a solarveil ring sling, which comes with a 6-week full money-back trial period.

Mother-and-Baby Club

Being a new mum can be very isolating, and all the evidence shows that if you have supportive friends you are likely to be happier, less likely to suffer from postnatal depression and so on. But it can be hard finding people you feel you want to talk to, that you have something in common with, especially when everyone else is already chatting and seems to have friends... so make the most of our mother-and-baby clubs to find new friends! At these meetings, mums can chat and make new friends over coffee and snacks, while our babies and toddlers (newborn to 3 years) play and take their own first steps in socializing! Share your concerns with other mums in similar situations, help other mums through your own experiences, and simply discover that, no matter what state you are in, you are definitely not alone!!
